* Our Purposes

The purposes of the Garden Club are ...

* To foster friendships among people with gardening interest.

* To increase knowledge of indoor and outdoor gardening.

* To encourage beautification within the community.

Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the months of September through June, at the River Bend Municipal Building, 45 Shoreline Drive, in River Bend. Guests are welcome. December and June are reserved for catered luncheons rather than meetings.

A half-hour Meet and Greet with refreshments begins at 12:30, and the meeting begins at 1:00 with a guest speaker’s presentation, followed by the general meeting for reports from officers and committee chairs. Annual dues are $20. Members need not be experienced gardeners or residents of River Bend to join. Men are welcome.

Elections are held each spring for a slate of officers, including a president, vice president, treasurer, corresponding secretary, and recording secretary. Additionally, the following committees, each headed by a volunteer chairperson, plan activities and carry out the various responsibilities of the club.

* Adopt-A-Plant

* Beautification

* Communication

* Historical

* Hospitality

* Membership

* Publicity

* Trips

* Ways and Means

The Club offers an opportunity to learn about gardening in coastal Carolina, to make new friends, and to meet your neighbors from River Bend and the surrounding areas.

Our speakers educate us on topics ranging from dealing with deer and choosing container plantings to garden crafts and adaptive gardening. Each meeting offers a chance to win a raffle plant or leave with free seeds, donated flower pots, or cuttings from members’ gardens.

* We always participate in River Bend's traditional Independence Day Parade! This year we decorated a convertible with paper flowers and flags, and walked our banner down the parade route. Thanks go to all the members who decorated and marched.

September Means Bake Sale

* Our annual Bake Sale is just one month away, and our members are already planning what to bake.  Mark your calendar for Saturday, September 27. Doors open at 7 a.m. at the River Bend Municipal Building for this, our only annual fundraiser.  Customers arrive early to seek out their favorites -- whether cookies, bars, cakes, or pies! Usually, the sale wraps up around noon.

What Makes a Gardener?

*   September 9 begins our 52nd year as River Bend's garden club. The season's first speaker is Maureen Loomer. Her topic is “What Makes a Gardener?” A retired community college professor, her background is in biology and medical research, including native and medicinal plants and alternative agriculture. It’s bound to be a fascinating PowerPoint presentation.
